Shutter is built so that the work you review stays with you. This page says exactly what goes where.
Your footage
When you open a clip or still, your browser reads it from your drive and plays it locally. The file isn't uploaded, and we don't receive any frame of it, unless you choose to upload it on a paid plan (below).
Clips you upload (Pro and Studio)
On Pro and Studio you can choose to upload a clip. It goes straight from your browser to Cloudflare Stream, which stores it and converts it for playback. Shutter's database records that you own it, its name, size, length and dimensions.
Uploaded clips can only be played through links that expire after a few hours, and Shutter only creates those links for you and for friends you've sent the review to. Removing a friend takes their access away.
Delete a cloud copy from your dashboard and it's deleted from Cloudflare Stream. Cancelling your plan doesn't delete uploaded clips; delete them yourself or contact us.
Payments
Paid plans are billed through Clerk, using Stripe to process payments. Shutter never sees your card number. Clerk tells Shutter which plan you're on.
Your notes, settings and thumbnails
Notes, review settings and the small preview image on each dashboard card are saved in your browser's storage on the device you use. We don't receive them unless you send a review to a friend (see below). They stay until you delete them in Settings, clear your browser data, or export them yourself.
Friends and messages
To use Friends, you pick a username. Shutter's database stores your username, the name you show on notes, your Clerk profile picture link, who you're friends with, and the messages and reviews you send. A review you send carries its notes, marks and the clip's name, size and frame rate. It never carries the footage.
Your friends see your name, username and picture. Anyone who knows your exact username can send you a friend request.
Messages are kept until one of you removes the other as a friend, which deletes the conversation for both of you. Reviews a friend already added to their own Shutter stay in their browser.
Your account
Sign-in is provided by Clerk. When you create an account, Clerk stores your email address, your name if you give one, and how you sign in. Clerk sets the cookies needed to keep you signed in. Clerk's own privacy policy covers how they handle that data.
Services your browser talks to
- Cloudflare hosts this site, Shutter's database and any clips you upload, and may keep standard request logs, such as IP address and pages requested.
- Stripe processes payments for paid plans, through Clerk.
- Clerk handles sign-in, as above.
- Unsplash serves the photos on our public pages.
- Google Fonts serves the display typeface.
We don't use analytics, advertising trackers, or any cookies of our own.
Deleting your data
Settings has a button that deletes every review saved on the device you're using. Removing a friend deletes your conversation with them. To delete your account, open Settings, choose Manage account, and delete it there; to have your username and messages removed from Shutter's database too, contact us at the address below.
